During this one month residency at the NES Artist Residency, located in the small village of Skagaströnd in northern Iceland, I worked on a series of projects that incorporated natural elements into my process: plein air watercolour paintings, wire sculptures of whale species in Iceland and an interactive installation piece. Winter weather, wind storms, snow storms, rain, ice, snow drifts, sea spray, freezing temperatures and the ocean itself manipulated my work and informed these series. During the residency I had the opportunity to teach a drawing class to a couple teenagers, meet with Halldór Ólafsson—founder of BioPol, a marine biotechnology company—and participate in an Opin Hus (Open House) with the other five Artists in Residence, where we were able to meet people from the local area and discuss our work.
