Birds, Glass Algae & Changing Seasons

Reinventing Birds

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with a room of brave people—cutting into book pages from Audubon and creating something new! I love instructing this workshop. It revolves around a collection of quirky projects that are meant to help with idea generation and getting into a creative flow… all inspired by birds! We traced, cut out, arranged, glued down and painted all afternoon long! I wish I had photos of all the work that came out of this class, because it was truly inspired! Here are a few images from our time together.

Water:Log Exhibition

Opening this Friday! (TOMORROW)

Opening Reception is Friday October 30th from 7pm-9pm
Gallery Hours Saturdays & Sundays 12pm-4pm (last day is November 15)
Located at arc.hive artist run centre (770B Hillside Ave)

This exhibition features experimental and investigative artworks that touch on themes of coastal memory and fragility, overlooked micro & macroscopic sea dwellers, traditional female handiwork and a historically acceptable form of scientific interest for women (diatom collecting).

Artists:
Simone Littledale
Tal Rouck
Maddy Vallée
Natasha van Netten
Xan Shian

Have you heard of ‘Victorian diatom collecting’? If not, check out this previous blog post, where I write more about it and include some photos and a video link (find it here). The pieces I have created for this exhibition (all brand new works for this show) are based on fashionable, microscopic collections of wealthy amateur naturalists from the 1800’s. If you, like myself, have a deep urge to want to organise and arrange elaborate, tiny, glass, algae… I hope you will come and engage with my interactive artwork at the show!

Artists will be in attendance at the Opening Reception and will take turns being at the gallery during weekend Gallery Hours.

I will be in the gallery Saturday October 31st from 12pm – 4pm (this Saturday).

Changing Seasons

I love this time of year and watching the season change. We recently got back from a road trip up north and I was able to watch the season speed up and then go back in time on our return. We even got to see some fresh snow on our home through the mountains. Here are a few pictures of Road Trip Minke: our ever-faithful road trip companion! He loves to explore and I love seeing the settings change around him!

Holiday Markets

Over the following six weekends, I will be popping up here and there around town (and beyond) at a variety of festive holiday markets! For a full and detailed list, please click here. If you are looking for some unique holiday gifts, greeting cards or stocking stuffers, these markets are a great place to find something special AND support your local community and artists.

I am excited to say that I also have a small stack of 2027 Whale Mail POSTCARD Calendars set aside to bring to markets. If you are looking for an engaging way to track the new year or maybe looking for a practical/useful gift for someone, this might be a good fit. It’s a calendar but it also turns into 12 postcards over the course of the year and you get 12 bonus to-do-lists as well. Every part of the calendar is used and then re-used!
